Cardiff’s winter wonderland is the focus for city new year’s eve celebration

Cardiff’s Winter Wonderland once again provides the focal point for New Year’s Eve celebrations, hosting free live music and a spectacular midnight firework display alongside the ever-popular ice rink.

Winter Wonderland operator Sayers Amusements is constructing a stage outside City Hall, where a musical line-up, hosted by John Lenney of Radio Cardiff, will perform live in the run up to 2017 and the firework finale. Revellers can skate, soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the Giant Wheel and fairground rides, or indulge in the food and drink on offer in the authentic Alpine Village with a Bier Keller, Glühwein and German hot dogs to really get you in the mood.

This year the Admiral ice rink has gone undercover for the first time, with a clear span roof to keep skaters dry in bad weather, that offers fantastic views of City Hall, and twinkling night sky lights to maintain the festive atmosphere ( Tickets: / 0333 666 3366).

Norman George Sayers, of the Welsh family run Sayers Amusements said: “We’re excited to bring the New Year’s Eve Party right back to the city centre where all the seasonal colour and fun of Winter Wonderland can work its magic on the anticipated large crowds. It’s our traditional way of seeing in the New Year in the capital, and we hope it can live up to the success of our new covered ice rink, which is pulling in record numbers this year.”

The New Year’s Eve schedule is:

Winter Wonderland open as usual from 10am

Family Funfair around Civic Centre open from midday

Stage in front of City Hall will start at 7.30 with Singer Luke Andrews

10.15 – midnight - local duo 'El Primo'

Midnight – Firework Finale

As with previous years Cardiff Bus, in partnership with Alexander Dennis Ltd, will be operating a special network of free to use bus services from 2000 until 0300 so you can head into Winter Wonderland and leave the car behind.  Full details of these routes are available from

As well as raising the roof, Winter Wonderland this year welcomes Admiral as sponsor of the ice rink, and 11th Hour Ice Ltd. as ice rink operator. They also continue their great relationship with Cardiff Council and Media Partner Capital FM.

Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury said: “I hope revellers have a safe but enjoyable New Year’s Eve in Cardiff this year. Why not welcome 2017 in style this year at Winter Wonderland? Also please remember that Cardiff Bus will be operating a free service on certain routes so please check their website for further details.”

In addition to Winter Wonderland this festive season, the Christmas Market in the Festive Quarter is the largest ever seen in the capital with 200 stall holders over the 43 days leading up to Christmas Eve. Santa is in residence in the Black Tower of Cardiff Castle until December 23; and a feast of festive screenings will be shown in the Underground Cinema on December 18 and 19. Other unmissable performances this season include The Russian Ballet Festival at St David’s Hall. The series of captivating ballets begins with three enchanting performances of La Fille Mal Gardée (December 20-21), The Nutcracker (December 22-28) and the greatest romantic ballet of all time, Swan Lake (December 29 – January 2).

Over at The New Theatre, this year’s panto will be ‘hofficially’ the biggest and best yet with David Hasselhoff playing the lead role of the dastardly Captain Hook in Peter Pan, until January 8.

Back on the ice, despite the new roof, skaters are still advised that this is an outdoor winter activity, so they are advised to dress accordingly.
